Lack of Access Identified as Primary Barrier to US Plastic Recycling

A new University at Buffalo study finds that people in the United States generate similar amounts of plastic packaging waste regardless of income, education level or where they live. Yet wealthier and more educated individuals are recycling less due to a lack of access rather than behavioral choices. This challenges assumptions about consumer behavior and suggests infrastructure gaps are the root cause of low recycling rates.
