It's Linh Mai: National Zoo Names Baby Elephant After 200,000 Public Votes

The voters have spoken. After more than 200,000 ballots were cast, the Smithsonian's National Zoo announced the name of its baby female Asian elephant: Linh Mai, meaning "beautiful jade" in Vietnamese. The name honors both the calf's Asian heritage and the zoo's mission to connect people with wildlife. The baby elephant, born in November, has already become one of the zoo's most popular attractions. Zoo officials said the naming vote drew participants from all 50 states and over 20 countries.
