An Amazonian Civilization Held an Estimated 3 Million People in 3% of the Forest

Researchers estimate that a pre-Columbian Amazonian civilization supported roughly three million people while occupying only about three percent of the forest's area, concentrated along waterways and managed earthworks. The work adds to a decade of findings overturning the idea of the Amazon as untouched wilderness before European contact.
