Ancient North American Mammals Gathered in Mexico Before Moving South

New analysis suggests mammals moving between the Americas staged in what is now Mexico and diversified there before crossing into South America, arriving already adapted rather than adapting on arrival. The finding revises the standard picture of the Great American Biotic Interchange, in which northern species are usually described as simply outcompeting southern ones.
