California bans marriage for anyone under 18

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law requiring people to be 18 to marry, with no exceptions, the BBC and California’s women’s commission report. It takes effect January 1, 2027. California joins 17 other states with outright bans after years of advocacy by survivors; previously, minors could marry with parental consent and a judge’s approval.
