Connected-car study tracks data sharing with advertising companies

Northeastern University and Consumer Reports tested 21 vehicles and 30 companion apps, finding connections to advertising and tracking services, Ars Technica reports. Researchers could identify destinations of encrypted vehicle traffic but not read its contents. Separate app tests found some sensitive identifiers being transmitted, highlighting how apps can increase a car owner’s privacy exposure.
