The Extinct American "Cheetah" Was Not a Cheetah After All

Miracinonyx trumani, long nicknamed the American cheetah for its slender body and long front legs, was not a close relative of the African big cat, according to a new study in Current Biology. Its build appears to be a case of convergent evolution. The animal was more closely tied to cougars.
