Two Extinct ‘Ghost’ Ancestors Are Found Hiding in Modern Human DNA
Using a method that does not require ancient DNA, researchers identified stretches of living human genomes inherited from hominins never found in the fossil record — including one lineage that split from ours roughly 1.8 million years ago. Our family tree, it turns out, has branches we have only ever seen from the inside.
