Millions Gather in Karbala for a Shia Pilgrimage

Millions of pilgrims converged on Karbala, Iraq, in August for one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world. Many Iraqi and Iranian pilgrims walked hundreds of miles in extreme heat. Outside the shrines, the atmosphere was almost festive.
