via Ars Technica·23h ago·2 sources

Ars Technica reports that a Nature study found six common plastics generated reactive oxygen molecules at their surfaces in water. Columbia researchers used several detection methods and experiments to test the effect. The work offers a possible mechanism for microplastic toxicity, but does not establish that these reactions cause human disease.
