Medieval Manuscripts Turn Out to Be Biological Time Capsules for Sheeppox

Parchment made from animal skin has preserved genetic traces of a deadly sheeppox virus, turning medieval manuscripts into records of past outbreaks. Researchers say other archives and libraries likely hold similar traces. The work opens a new source for studying historical epidemics.
