After Upton Sinclair's The Jungle drove stricter food safety rules in the early twentieth century, NASA pushed the standards further to guarantee that astronaut food carried no pathogens. The agency's hazard-analysis approach was later adopted across the commercial food industry. It remains the backbone of US inspection practice.
