New Images Reveal Whirlpools on the Sun's Surface That May Power Flares
High-resolution observations captured swirling vortices on the solar surface that appear to funnel energy upward into the atmosphere. Researchers think the structures could help explain why the corona is far hotter than the surface below it. The images come from a new generation of ground telescopes.
