New virus group offers clues to evolution of cellular protein shells

via Phys.org·18h ago·2 sources

University of Miami reporting carried by Phys.org describes newly identified viruses whose protein shells share features with cellular compartments called encapsulins. A Nature Communications study argues for repeated evolutionary transitions in both directions. The history is inferred from sequence and structural comparisons; the work does not establish human infection or disease.
