The Photo Ark Reaches Its 18,000th Species: a Punk-Rock Handfish
Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark, a decades-long effort to photograph every species in human care against plain black and white backdrops, has reached 18,000 subjects. Number 18,000 is the critically endangered red handfish, described by National Geographic as looking “like a moody punk rocker” — a fish that walks on its fins and is down to a few dozen known individuals.
