Tiny Shrews Grow Bigger Snouts and Shrink Their Brains for Winter

Long-clawed shrews from Hokkaido, Japan, appear to shrink their brains during cold months and regrow them in spring, a pattern known in some small mammals. The new study suggests they also grow larger snouts over winter. Researchers think the tradeoff conserves energy while improving foraging.
