A Million Years Without Sex Failed to Erase a Stick Insect’s Unused Biology

Research led by Bangor University found that an asexually reproducing stick insect has retained the genetic machinery for sexual reproduction after roughly a million years of not using it. Evolutionary theory predicts such systems decay quickly; this one has not, and no one is sure what is preserving it.
