Supreme Court Lets Stand Ruling Ending Private Enforcement of Voting Rights Act in 7 States
The Supreme Court allowed a lower-court ruling to stand that eliminates the ability of private parties to sue under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in seven states. The decision strips a longstanding tool civil-rights groups have used to challenge alleged discrimination against minority voters. Future enforcement in those states would fall to the Justice Department.
