Two Thumbnail-Size Bird Sculptures Carved From Mammoth Ivory 40,000 Years Ago

The figurines, under an inch long, were buried beneath Germany's Hohle Fels Cave — the site that has produced some of the oldest known figurative art anywhere. They extend the record of what early humans chose to represent.
