Fiber-optic borehole sensing tests small-earthquake measurements

via Phys.org·11h ago

A Utah study used 1,600 fiber-optic sensing channels in a three-kilometre borehole to analyze thousands of microearthquakes, Eos reports through Phys.org. Researchers found depth-dependent signal losses and warn that cable orientation and measurement length can bias estimates. The technique may improve measurements; the study does not demonstrate improved earthquake forecasts.
