Japan raises permanent-residency fee to 200,000 yen

Japan raised its permanent-residency application fee twentyfold to 200,000 yen and introduced tighter income and pension requirements, the BBC reports. Other residency fees now vary by length of stay, with hardship and refugee discounts. A basic Japanese-language requirement begins next April, rather than taking effect with today’s fee increase.
