Judge ends federal oversight of Oakland police
A federal judge ended 23 years of court oversight of Oakland’s police department, The Guardian reports. The reform process began after misconduct lawsuits involving officers known as the Riders and required changes to complaint handling, racial-profiling data and policing practices. Community advocates say independent scrutiny remains necessary despite the court’s decision.
