Rubin data identify a large asteroid spinning about every four minutes

via Phys.org·18h ago·2 sources

Phys.org reports that researchers analyzing Rubin Observatory brightness data identified asteroid 491384, about 2.5 km across, rotating roughly every 4.18 minutes. Their preprint finds 66 fast-rotator candidates using software that flags uncertain periods. The inferred spin implies internal cohesion; the study remains a preprint.
