Small trial reports limited vision gains with optogenetics

In a ten-patient trial, an optogenetic treatment helped some people with retinitis pigmentosa detect and locate objects, Reuters reports. Gene therapy was paired with specialized goggles; six patients showed functional gains. One severe adverse event resolved within minutes, and larger studies are needed to establish safety and benefit.
