Tiny Baltic Sea microbes carry carbon downward in aggregates

Stockholm University researchers linked differences in how tiny cyanobacteria form aggregates to carbon transport into deeper Baltic Sea waters, Phys.org reports. Sediment traps and genetic analyses showed some strains sank more readily than others. The findings explain a local export mechanism; how it scales to other oceans remains uncertain.
