Two Laboratories Measure Quarter-Electron Charge in a Quantum Hall State

Researchers at two laboratories measured quasiparticles carrying one-quarter of an electron’s charge in a gallium arsenide quantum well. The experiments provide a benchmark for studying an unusual fractional quantum Hall state. They do not by themselves establish the exchange properties needed for proposed fault-tolerant quantum computers.
