US leaves European anti-corruption monitoring body

The United States has withdrawn from the Council of Europe’s GRECO anti-corruption body, OAN and The Guardian report. The State Department says membership fees brought no tangible national-security benefit and favors sanctions, visa restrictions and targeted assistance instead. The Council of Europe called the US a valuable contributor and left the door open to renewed cooperation.
