Arctic sea-ice minimum ties for tenth-lowest in satellite record

Arctic sea ice reached an estimated 4.6 million square kilometres at its September 12 minimum, tying 2008, 2010 and 2025 for the tenth-lowest satellite-era minimum, NASA reports in a new October 7 review. The recent summer plateau remains below the long-term average, while surviving ice is younger and thinner. Weather variability affects individual years.
