Kumamoto Castle withstood an 1877 assault by forces rebelling against Emperor Meiji, and stood for four centuries as a symbol of the fortress that could not be taken. A recent earthquake accomplished what the siege could not, collapsing sections of the structure and confronting Japan with another long restoration.
