Rock analyses identify an obscured ancient volcanic arc in Iran

via Phys.org·yesterday

Researchers led by Istanbul Technical University identify evidence of a continental volcanic arc active in northwestern Iran about 101–97 million years ago, Phys.org reports. Zircon dating, isotope measurements and rock chemistry suggest later tectonic changes obscured its record. The study adds evidence to reconstructions of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, while the region’s wider tectonic evolution remains debated.
