Cacao DNA found on pottery at Georgia’s Etowah site

Researchers found cacao DNA on two pottery fragments from Etowah in present-day Georgia, Smithsonian Magazine reports. The fragments come from an approximately 1050–1150 feast context, and the underlying study appeared in August. How cacao reached the site and how people used it remain unknown; the finding does not identify a trade route.
