Telescopes detect prolonged X-rays after a short gamma-ray burst

A roughly 0.4-second gamma-ray burst was accompanied by nearly ten minutes of soft X-rays, University of Hong Kong researchers report in a September 30 release summarized by Phys.org. Their Science Bulletin study interprets the event as a likely compact-object merger. A magnetized neutron-star remnant is one possible explanation, rather than a directly confirmed object.
