Antarctic review identifies major gaps in forecasts for Wilkes Basin ice

via Phys.org·3h ago

An international review finds that East Antarctica’s Wilkes Subglacial Basin is vulnerable to ice retreat but too poorly observed for reliable forecasts of timing or thresholds, the University of Tasmania reports through Phys.org. The basin contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by 3–4 meters if lost. That is potential ice volume, not a prediction of imminent rise.
