Coca leaves on sacrificed llamas illuminate Inka ritual

Archaeologists found coca leaves preserved in the wool of sacrificed llamas at Peru’s Tambo Viejo, Phys.org reports. The September 7 Ñawpa Pacha study links the leaves to ritual offerings and differs from colonial accounts describing burned coca. The find documents this site’s practice; it does not establish how every Inka ceremony used the plant.
