An Oxford-led molecular-clock analysis estimates animal origins could extend back 800–700 million years, Live Science reports. The estimates depend on fossil calibrations and assumptions about evolutionary rates. The work suggests gaps in the fossil record; it does not supply fossils proving animals existed that early.
