Genetic switch explains an extra light receptor in butterfly eyes

A Science Advances study identified the genetic change behind an extra light-sensing cell in painted lady butterflies, Phys.org and UC San Diego report. Recreating it in fruit flies produced an additional receptor that connected to spare brain neurons. Whether the modified flies actually perceive more colors remains untested.
