Museum specimen reveals new Caribbean giant isopod species

University of Tübingen researchers identified a 32.2-centimeter Puerto Rico specimen, kept in a collection since the 1980s, as Bathynomus tuebingoborikensis, Phys.org reports. The species description appears in Scientific Reports. Their reconstruction of the genus’s spread between oceans is an evolutionary inference from anatomical comparisons, rather than a directly observed migration.
